Touching the Past:
Ancient Pottery Making
with Graham Taylor
2nd - 5th October

The pottery of the pre Roman, native tribes of Britain is both
beautiful and functional. Surviving in the earth for many thousands of
years it presents us with snapshots of the lives of these ancient people
and yet the function of many of these vessels is enigmatic.
From the
Neolithic to the Iron-Age, pottery was created entirely by hand from natural clay an fired in open fires and simple turf built kilns. The
workshop will explore the meaning, function and methods of manufacture of
ancient pottery and equip participants with the basic skills to create
their own replicas. You will learn how to prospect for clay sources,
prepare the clay for working, make your own tool kit, form and decorate
vessels and safely fire them in a simple kiln. Please note the firing
weekend is a separate event as noted below.

Graham Taylor is a craftsman potter with over thirty years workshop
experience and a lifetime fascination with archaeology.

FiringWeekend

Following on from the construction of the clay pots, time must be
allowed for natural drying in preparation for firing. This will take
place on the Saturday and kilns opened on the Sunday. There will be
ample opportunity to refine pot building and decorating skills
during the weekend.
